Go with the flow and explore the only river in the City of Seattle
A delicate balancing act on the Duwamish River
By Kathryn True, Special to The Seattle Times
“People are interested in the industrial aspects of the Duwamish River and seeing how wildlife can exist and thrive here,” says Greg Whittaker of Alki Kayak Tours. “A lot of Seattleites take this tour because the river has been cut off from us. This is the best way to see every aspect of it.”

Duwamish Rowing Club
In February 2012, the DRC established a “boathouse” in South Park near Duwamish Waterway Park. Their mission is to bring the sport of rowing to the residents of South Park (and surrounding neighborhoods), and to offer recreational access to the Duwamish river that is afforable for everyone. They strive to develop a rowing club that emphasizes good sportsmanship, integrity, and strength of character.
Join us on the river sometime. Click here to find out how.

River City Skate Park
736 S. Cloverdale
The River City Skate Park, also known as Stargate, is a free, open to the public, concrete skatepark located in the heart of South Park. Due to its proximity to Hwy 99 and it’s tight access to S Cloverdale St., the site was optimal for a skatepark. Before construction the site was unoccupied and collecting garbage from illegal dumping. Sea Mar Community Health Centers owns the property and partnered with Grindline Skateparks and the South Park Neighborhood Association to develop a place for the youth of our city.
SOUTH PARK BOXING CLUB
Two buildings on site. One with a ring and punching bags, a second with an exercise room with weights and exercise equipment. The gym is a department of SeaMar Community Health Centers. Contact: Juan Garcia 206-406-3870
Sea Mar’s year-round Amateur Boxing Club serves 35 high-risk youth. Youth currently in the program are predominately from Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. About 90% of participants are Latinos, with the balance being white, black or Asian. Ages range from 8-17 years old, 23 are males and 2 are females. Our coaches have more than 30 years of combined experience in youth boxing.
Youth Boxing Program Keeps Kids off Street
The club’s executive director Juan Garcia says “It’s a very difficult sport, but if you can do this you can pretty much conquer anything in life.”
Although a boxing program to keep kids out of trouble may seem like a contradiction, it’s a serious commitment of four nights a week in the gym.
